Communication training for the energy sector

We prepare the people who speak for oil and gas companies, utilities, renewables and regulators: for the interview, the incident, the investor and the community. Based in London, delivered worldwide.

190+ energy organisations trained · 45 countries · Five continents · Since 2003

Why energy communication is different

The people who speak for an energy company answer to regulators, investors, governments, local communities and a press that often starts from suspicion. Reassure one audience and you can provoke another.

When something goes wrong it goes wrong fast, in public, and on a scale that pulls in far more than the communication team. A spill or a safety incident can put operational leads, technical experts and regional managers in front of a camera within hours. All of them have to be ready.

When the company is a national oil company its people speak for a country as well as a business, and government, commerce and public affairs land in the same answer. We have been doing this work in energy longer than in any other sector.

Case studies

Saudi Aramco: a communication training academy for 250 staff

We designed and ran a training academy for the company's communication, public relations and government affairs staff, mapping the skills each role needed, assessing every participant and writing an individual development plan for each. More than 250 people went through it with a faculty of over 15 international specialists, and Public Affairs Asia named the programme highly commended. Across 25 separate projects we have trained and coached more than 350 people at Saudi Aramco.

PETRONAS: a live crisis simulation across four time zones

We built and ran a crisis simulation with managers at facilities in Malaysia, Canada, Indonesia and Europe inside the same live exercise. A crisis unfolded in real time, with ambush interviews, simulated social media and pre-recorded news bulletins, testing whether strategy, systems and people held together. Two of our coaches worked with the core team face to face while the remote offices joined online.

COTCO: a bilingual pipeline crisis simulation

For the Cameroon Oil Transportation Company and its Chad pipeline partner we designed a rolling pipeline crisis scenario, media-trained the spokespeople, then ran the exercise live in French and English with people spread across two companies and a head office. The whole programme ran online, with our studio handling recording and replay for coaching.

Saudi Electricity Regulatory Authority: corporate and crisis communication for the regulator

We train the authority's staff in corporate and crisis communication, an ongoing relationship on the regulatory side of the sector as well as the operators it oversees.

What we train energy people for

Every programme is built for the situation your people will face, using your operations, your stakeholders and the stories they will be asked about.

The interview

Media training and spokesperson development, with interview scenarios drawn from the energy stories your people will be asked about, several rounds on camera and a written trainer assessment for each participant so the head of communication knows how ready the team is.

Media training

The incident

Crisis communication in three formats: crisis media skills for spokespeople, classroom training on crisis strategy for the communication team, and full simulations that test the whole response, standalone, inside an operational drill, or across several sites and languages at once.

Crisis communication

The regulator and the government

Public affairs and government relations for the people who negotiate licences, tariffs, safety findings and policy, and for the regulators on the other side of the table.

Public affairs

The stage, the panel and the investor day

Public speaking training and one-to-one executive coaching for the leaders who present strategy, results and the transition story to investors, conferences and boards.

Public speaking and coaching

The transition story

Corporate communication and PR strategy, reputation and ESG communication: the disclosure rules and stakeholder expectations that now decide how energy companies are judged.

Corporate communication strategy

The workforce

Internal and change communication for the large, dispersed operations that depend on engaging people across sites, shifts and countries.

Internal communication

How we work with energy clients

In-house and built for you

Most of our energy work is in-house training for one organisation, designed around the brief. We build the scenarios from your operations and your stakeholders, and we bring the trainers to your site, wherever it is.

In-house training

Academies for a whole function

When a whole communication function needs building we run an academy: we map what each role requires, assess people against it, write a development plan for every person, then deliver the programme with a faculty of senior specialists and measure progress against the original map.

Formats and languages

On site anywhere in the world, live online, or both at once for simulations that run across several facilities. We deliver in English, Arabic and French, with recording and replay from our studio for coaching.
