Michael Burrell is an independent public affairs consultant, who provides advice to clients, often at Chairman and CEO level, on UK and EU lobbying and media relations. He also has extensive experience of training on these subjects both in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. His experience has encompassed many sectors, including aviation, diplomacy, energy, the environment, financial services, the legal profession, pharmaceuticals, technology, telecommunications and welfare to work. The wide range of clients whom he has advised includes the Bar Council, BT, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Microsoft, Pfizer, Roche and Samsung. Michael was Chair of the UK’s Association of Professional Political Consultants (APPC), both in its early years and again in 2014, when he negotiated with the Cabinet Office, securing recognition for the APPC in the Government’s legislation establishing a statutory register of consultant lobbyists. A former political journalist, his earlier consultancy roles were at Westminster Strategy (which he founded), Edelman (where he was Vice Chairman, Europe) and APCO Worldwide (where he was Vice Chairman, Public Affairs Europe). He is also an officer of the European Centre for Public Affairs (ECPA), a Brussels-based “best practice in public affairs” organisation, whose members are companies, trade associations and consultancies. Michael was the first ever winner of the “Outstanding Contribution to European Public Affairs” award at the European Public Affairs News awards. Public Affairs News described him as “a European public affairs legend” and PR Week as one of the industry’s 100 most influential figures.
