    This is an intermediate-level course designed for executives who need to engage with government, legislators and politicians for work. Learning is pitched at a level to help you to synthesise best practice and direct strategic implementation.

    About this course

    What to expect

    Implementing government and public affairs programmes is an ISOC focused immersion course. It is designed to develop practical and enduring expertise in one particular specialty – government and public affairs.  You will not have to sit through long lectures or presentations – this course uses active learning to help you internalise the topic and apply it in the real world.

    The course follows a hands-on format, revolving around a variety of fun and fast-paced exercises. Participants can expect to do direct work on their individual government affairs strategy and tactics for their own organisations – returning to the office at the end of training with new ideas, tools and techniques to put in place right away. 

    This is a practical look at the nuts and bolts of running a public affairs programme and sits within the week-long public affairs and government relations training programme.

    Training format

    This course comprises four modules each covering a set of key concepts and skills, each module runs for one day. Within each module, best practice and key concepts are covered off in a concise briefing, followed by stimulating learning activities like workshops, discussions, case studies and role-play exercises.

    Learning outcomes

    • This course is focused on how to implement a strategy. Pulling together learning from days 1 and 2, this session culminates in a practical workshop in which learners create a government relations and public affairs strategy for their own organisation. 
    • Throughout the day learners will explore key differences between different political jurisdictions and examine their own in greater detail, creating a more rounded understanding of the dynamics within which they operate. 
    • Using up-to-date case studies we look at a suite of different programme frameworks and tactics as used by range of organisations from different sectors including corporate, professional services and the charity sector. 
    • We also evaluate the different tools and tactics used to engage different stakeholders.

    Module 1: Understanding the dynamics of political jurisdictions to maximise results

    • Using insights in to your own jurisdiction

    Module 2: Using different lobbying programme frameworks for your campaign

    • Evaluating different programme approaches and tactics
    • Understanding a variety of programme objectives
    • Using case studies and workshops to identify the right tactics for your strategy

    Module 3: Utilizing the best tools and tactics to engage with stakeholders

    • Using communications tools to engage the media and political decision-makers
    • In depth look at multiple case studies
    • Building popular and local support

    Module 4: Practical workshop: developing a strategy for your organisation

    • Bring together learning from three days of training to produce a strategy for your organisation
